The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexandre Dumas)

The characterization is wonderful, the plotting is tight, and the social commentary is sharp - but that's not why this book is close to my heart. I love it because the Count is not a power fantasy, but a justice fantasy. Yes, the Count uses power to enact his revenge, but we only see him through the eyes of secondary characters. We are not invited to share his pleasure directly. Instead, our pleasure comes from seeing villains get their comeuppance and heroes their just deserts. Basically, this book is an ode to FAFO. I approve.
