Rating Things on a Five Point Scale

One of life’s true pleasures. I can spend hours contemplating whether “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out” or Jamocha Almond Fudge ice cream or “Destination Unknown” by the Missing Persons deserves a 3 or a 3.5. Paradoxically, a five star scale with half stars is a lot more fun than a ten point scale, a fact guaranteed to annoy topologists.

It’s tricky to figure out what scale others are using though. For example, if a friend says something (movie, book, dish, item, etc) is a ‘four’, then what do they mean? Are they grading that on a 5/5 scale or a 10/10 scale? Would them saying something is a ‘four’ mean it was “pretty good” or “under average”?
