Man, 2006 is another rough year to pick just one, but since I have rec'd Pan's Labyrinth here and am for sure going to go see it in the theater again later this year, I'll give it the nod for this particular request. (Runners-up: The Lives of Others, The Departed, Children of Men, and The Prestige, any one of which would easily make the cut here.)

“A fairy tale-like dark fantasy set in Spain during World War II. This pretty much single-handedly made me a Guillermo del Toro fan for life even though he's never topped it (and almost certainly never will). This and The Lives of Others hitting theaters within a few months of each other in 2006 was such an incredible one-two punch.”

“One of Guillermo del Toro's earliest movies and it's a fantastic fairy tale on film.”
