Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

Nice to see John Steinbeck having a moment. My favourite Steinbeck is Cannery Row, with it's cast of flawed yet charming characters and their exploits in early 20th century coastal California. It's an easy read, as well as being funny, melancholy and plain lovely. An ideal autumnal book.
