A devout Christian and Scottish inspector named Howie receives notice that a young girl named Rowan has disappeared on Summerisle, an island of pagan practitioners. As he questions the residents, he is appalled by not only their antiquated ways of living but the fact that no one claims to know who the girl is! The inspector grows increasingly suspicious the whole place is in cahoots.

Howie is soon introduced to Lord Summerisle (the island's charming, oddball leader), who does little to ease Howie's suspicions.
