Just start with two brushes

Initially I walked into Blick and picked up a bunch random brushes that I almost never use any more. After some expensive trial and error and lots reddit scrolling, next time I'd start with two higher quality synthetic round brushes (likely a size 8 and 4) then expand from there to something for washes and a finer detail brush.
