I realized a few years ago that my dad has developed some serious hoarding tendencies. He even has literal drawersful of cards that people sent him for various holidays that are just signed, with nothing personal written inside. So I am constantly trying to think of immaterial gifts for him. I tried to get him a story worth subscription, but it was too much work and I think he only responded twice. The biggest hit so far has been a scavenger hunt that ended at the library, specifically to a book about chess. I had him bring the book to the front circulation desk. I’d pre-asked the librarian to tell him about their chess club date and time. He ended up going weekly for a year and made a lot of new friends. He still talks about what a cool “gift” it was.
