octavia butler is a literary genius. her world building and ability to mirror humanity in her work is incredible and refreshing in this era of literary death. my fave series by her so far is the Lilith’s Brood/Xenogenesis series. The Earthseed series is a close second.

Hard agree! She also wrote my favorite Vampire story focusing on biology and genetics. Her short stories will also just gut you. Butler’s work hangs around in my brain for years afterwards - she’s that good. They assign Kindred to High schoolers which makes me conflicted because it takes her from something joyous to forced reading but also hopefully opens their eyes to some great writing. That said, Kindred is almost my least favorite of her works.

Yes, her work just never leaves you and continues to push you to think. And also, that’s fair! I discovered Butler through school and decided to keep reading because I loved the genre. We can only hope that some students would do the same.
