Maria is brilliantly funny, and leads with her weirdness and darkness and growing pains. Throughout her career Maria has talked openly about making mistakes, getting called out, making changes. For example, she gave up a lucrative Target ad deal because of their exploitative labor practices, and responded with learning when fans called out some biphobia in her material. She’s also open about the complications of publicly doing good (very self aware of white savior complex that can creep in for a white lady etc etc etc).
She knows and respects her own limits, and in doing so respects and uplifts other artists (ie making sure people get paid for their work). She is open about the fact that she’s not for everyone and she accepts and embraces that. And yet, it’s been said over and over, she’s your favorite comedian’s favorite comedian.
