It’s on my “read yearly” list for sure !

I remember feeling like it really captured so much of what’s moving to me about fairy tales. I never read the sequel, thank you for the reminder. I am a sucker for kind of darkly nostalgic, thoughtful portal fantasy. Have you ever read The Magicians? There’s also this book The Lost Story I just heard about

Yes that’s exactly what I think! You will definitely want to read the second, it’s so good! Darkly nostalgic—I like that. I might steal it :) The Magicians is on my shelf right now!! And I’ll be adding the Lost Story to my list, thank you! I’ve heard the Book of Doors was good too!

Hey, I’m reading for the journey not to write a critical analysis—lots of my favorites were ones people said were bad but I found to be unique and beautiful! Sounds like you’re that way too, refreshing! So excited to move this higher on the TBR!

There are things he could have handled better. But the concept of “depressive learns magic can’t fix everything but somehow there’s still hope” is a game-changer for me. And yes looking at your recs I think we are on the same page!
