Whole Foods Wild Berry Chantilly Cake
•••
I love cake but I don’t bake. I never thought a grocery store cake could be good until my BFF told me about this one. (She’s very discerning about food- and everything else- ha) This cake is delicious and the perfect size for a small dinner party (6 inches).

Happy birthday!
•••
If it all possible, I take my birthday off from work and go on an adventure - if I can make it an overnight trip, even better. I choose a place I’ve been curious about that fits my time/money budget. A small museum, a famous writers birth town, whatever. A friend or a partner can come but I’ve had great ones on my own. It relieves any pressure for the day to be a certain way because I’m outside my usual norms and I don’t need it to look a certain way. I answer birthday calls and texts throughout the day and feel connected to and loved by other people that way. I’m follow my own whims throughout the day and I feel really aligned and present with myself.

Nothing lovelier than receiving the gift of a massage (preferably with an appointment already booked)! I love this spot for a relaxing morning - grabbing lunch and some ice cream before heading home refreshed.

When someone asks what you want for your birthday...direct them to your Rec League!
•••
So it's my birthday on Thursday (yes, I'm a Leo, obviously I have to announce it to the world), and a friend who's insisting on buying me a gift asked what my favourite scents were. Naturally, I replied, "Your presence is the only present I need!", to which she responded, "Well, I'm going to buy you something anyway, so you might as well tell me!"... So I sent her a link to my rec league collection of my favourite smells! It's giving wedding registry but more fun! Also yes that is little me circa 1989 🥲 I ♥️ @Rec League!

Romance yourself! Romance your friends!
•••
Truly cannot recommend this more highly. Romance yourself! Book yourself in for a treat-yourself day - spa, sauna, massage, mani pedi, hair, facial - whatever. You also don't have to spend money to do this! Spend a day alone without too many distractions - journal about what you're grateful for (even something as simple as sunshine or clean water or a roof over your head), connect with nature, listen to a song that makes you feel loved (my rec would be Know That You Are Loved by Cleo Sol), light some incense/your fave candle, swim in the ocean or take a bath, make your favourite meal, kiss/pat a cute animal. Romance your friends! Send a love letter to your bestie. Make a playlist for a friend with all your favourite songs. Prepare a delicious dinner for a friend & decorate the table with flowers. Send a text just to tell your friends you love them. Buy a little gift for a friend just because. Write all the things you love about your bestie on little bits of paper, put them in a jar and gift it to them to read when they're feeling down. Deliver a tasty treat from the bakery. Call a mate you haven't spoken to in ages. Plan a FaceTime catch-up with a long-distance bestie. Send them a video of yourself doing a silly dance!

Throw Yourself an Impromptu Birthday Matcha Meet-Up
•••
Text all your friends with less than 24 hours notice and invite them to come to your favorite cafe for birthday matchas. See who rallies last minute. Send invites to out-of-town friends with "wish you were here!" messages to let them know you are thinking of them. Be delighted at the mix of people who show up and grateful for spontaneous cross-pollinating get-togethers. A great kick-off to your next trip around the sun.

Little kids seem to love it just as much as any toy, it lasts a surprisingly long time, and parents can throw it away when it deflates.

Informing people in person that it’s your birthday
$6.95
•••
Casually mentioning that “it’s actually my birthday today” to people I come across in person on the Big Day (other moms at preschool pickup, neighbors, grocery cashiers, baristas etc) is the best. I firmly believe people want to celebrate one another, and I get a rush watching other people’s face light up due to having someone to whom they can heartily proclaim the ol’ HBD. (It also feels way better than sheepishly hiding the fact and thus being all sadgirl about people not knowing). It makes me feel confident, connected to humanity, and grateful to be alive. (And to everyone out there, I always want to know if it’s your birthday)
