Older National Geographics are a treasure trove and my favorite plane reading material. Anything from 1910-1999 is great, but the golden years at the overlap of the leafed cover and color photography are mesmerizing. The writing is hit or miss but often very good, and the photography is always astounding. Keep an eye out at the dump or thrift store and you can amass a hoard easily customizable to your travel interests. Bring one along relavant to the trip you are on, or just one that catches your eye. Place an index card inside for look-up-later notes, and you've got the perfect phone-free flight ahead. They fit neatly in the literature pocket of the seat in front, and are small enough to leave room on the tray for a cup of coffee or tea.
