Make Believe by Mac Barnett (2026)

Mac Barnett is top shelf children’s book author for me. Every single book he writes is an instant hit with my child (and me). He’s so smart and charming and his writing is perfectly edited and not a single unnecessary word is used. This book I breezed through and I selfishly wish he would write more books for adults even though that’s a pet peeve when people ask him that 😂 I also learned David Foster Wallace was one of his professors in college which BLEW MY MIND. Anyway, if you have an opportunity to go to one of his book tour stops with your kiddo I can’t recommend it enough. He’s also just so nice.

We saw him and Shawn Harris on tour for the latest First Cat In Space book ... such a hoot. They led an auditorium of kids dressed as astronaut cats, space pirates, and toe-nail clipping robots in several rousing sea shanties, haha.

I’m so jealous, they are my version of celebs!

I will forever consider MB part of my pandemic parenting bubble; in the lockdown days, he would read a book from his personal picture book collection every afternoon, and my kid and I would sit and listen and eat popsicles. A good time in a bad time.
