The Summer Book by Tove Jansson

the story of a little girl and her grandmother spending the summer on a remote finnish island. many novels try to shape themselves around a pivotal absence that is never explained and only ever implied through the actions of the central characters, but few are really successful, imo. this beautiful, bittersweet novel is the positive example par excellence.
