Big oil is a BIG problem.
A defiant young visionary, part stand-up comic, part young Bob Dylan, part brilliant mind, leads a wildly disruptive and unexpectedly joyful climate movement that channels Gandhi’s Satyagraha, the Civil Rights Movement, and ACT UP to shake society awake and demand a livable future.
Two really talented female directors Betsy Hershey & Emma Wall alongside producers Natja Rosner & Signe Byrge Sørensen and exec producers Academy Award winning writer and director Adam McKay & Academy Award nominated director Joshua Oppenheimer have made a film that's hard to watch and IMHO necessary and also REALLY INSPIRING. I was lucky enough to attend a screening during Climate Week in NYC - a packed house and a Q&A with Michael Greenberg and the directors after which is worth finding online (currently working on a link to add here)
In their words the why and what of the mission:
JUST LOOK UP follows Michael Greenberg, a brazen visionary and founder of Climate Defiance, a disruptive youth movement. In the tradition of Gandhi’s Satyagraha, the Civil Rights Movement, and ACT UP, they use radical nonviolent direct action to jolt society awake, calling out Big Oil, corporate CEOs, and the politicians who enable them.
The film charts a motley, idealistic crew improvising, failing, regrouping, and pushing on to protect the planet. As they press forward, the film’s propulsive soundtrack is not background but fuel, with Chappell Roan, Doechii, and Billie Eilish pushing the pace and sharpening the stakes for a generation with no room to fail.
In the days that followed the screening Climate Defiance confronted executives from both Amazon and Open AI during climate week for the hypocrisy of their attendance in line with their planet destroying practices.
