Impersonal essays

I once watched a Zoom book discussion between Eliot Weinberger and Hari Kunzru, where EW described his work as 'impersonal essays.' I think about that description all the time because I wish more writers would give themselves this freedom. What you write and how you write about it is already deeply personal; there is no need to strip-mine your actual life and experiences and relationships to sell into the content maw. Sometimes pulling yourself out of a story is a more radical way of being in it.
