Pleasure of Ruins by Rose Macaulay

From a 2011 review on Waste Effects:

"Rose Macaulay’s late, great work, Pleasure of Ruins, is one of the first books to give an expanded history of architectural decay. It represents an inquisition into the images, philosophy, theology, archaeology and literature of ruin. And, moreover, it is a book that allows its subject matter to infect its logic and form: it is a sprawling and enigmatic work; an excessive and truly stupendous book. "
