Filed under stories that did not get written: For HEARTBEAT, we considered a feature on Francois Morel, who has been hand-making bird calls since 1980. In the end, we commissioned a different feature on the history of mechanical birdsong, but I remain charmed and beguiled by these. Each one is a little sonic sculpture.

Gave some of these to older birding family members at Christmas last year. Thought I had nailed gift of the year. They were just confused. I should have kept em.

Yeah, most of the hard-core birders I know eschew calls; they don't need 'em!

“Everything about this company and its whistles is whimsical: the packaging, the how-to videos, the love of birds, and, of course, the whistles themselves, which sound amazing and resemble tiny machinery.”
