Room 1 at The British Museum (The Enlightenment Gallery): London, England
•••
This is the oldest room at the British Museum (originally built as a library for George III), and it is set up as a massive cabinet of curiosities culled from the museum's terrifyingly vast collection. You can have a marvelous time simply wandering around this single gallery. The last time I was there, I saw John Dee's scrying mirror, some of Mary Delany's papercut flower specimens, and shells collected by Joseph Banks from his trip to Tahiti to see the transit of Venus, among many other treasures. And a short distance away are galleries showcasing the Rosetta Stone and the much-contested Elgin marbles. My list of London recommendations is looooong (it is a city I love to visit) + I will not spam you with them, but feel free to message me if you'd like more.

Prufrock Coffee

Got to check out Prufrock Coffee! I went to so many coffee shops when I was in London and this was my favorite. There was also a bunch of food vendors on the street outside the coffee shop when I went, but I’m not sure if that was a one-time thing haha

afternoon tea

when i was in college, i more or less ran into my aunt while i was on spring break in london (she just happened to be there on vacation, too). she took me out to a spectacular tea i never would’ve paid for myself on my shoestring budget at the mandarin oriental. i can’t attest that it is the best tea in london because it’s the only one i’ve done, BUT it was by all metrics incredible and my aunt is a woman of impeccable taste who i’m sure did her research, so i think this is a very safe bet for top tier 🫖

One of my favorite museums I’ve ever been to! The statue ‘Santa Medicina’ in particular, is etched into my mind forever.
