If you ever think your life is wild, just KNOW IT'S NOT! Patti Smith's crazy youth slumming it in New York with gay-lover Mapplethorpe is a total gobsmacker lol. From living in the Chelsea Hotel with bugs and bruises, rubbing shoulders with the artistique elites, and making it through AIDS, this book is actually such a mad ride. Respect, Patti!!!! Also - look up Mapplethorpe's photography??? I'm new to this!

“The most beautiful and heartbreaking story of old New York that I've re-read again and again. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy if you haven't had a chance to.”

“Has remained in my top 5 favorite books from the moment I read it (15 years ago).”

“This book was on my mom's nightstand when I was a kid and I thought the cover image was her and dad with my mom wearing a wig. Also extra fun for me because Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe's first apartment was down the street from where I grew up in Brooklyn! 160 Hall Street for 80 bucks a month.Beautiful book as expected from such a thoughtful and brilliant writer.”
