Do you happen to know what types of paint I should focus on? I went to our reuse store and there was a lot of watercolor which I got, but he likes the thicker stuff too and I’m not sure what’s fun to play around with vs frustrating

I’d start with acrylic! It’s not toxic like oils so you don’t need ventilation or to deal with/dispose of chemicals with the same level of responsibility. You can also buy “mediums” for acrylics to add different textures to the paint. If you ask someone who works there or at any art supply store if they have “acrylic mediums,” they will know what you’re talking about.
