In 2019, I dragged my bf and a friend onto the Metro North to see what we'd find at the stop where the Appalachian Trail crosses the tracks (the stop is called Appalachian Trail, it's just past Pawling, trains only stop there on weekends, and there's no platform so you have to leap down from the train in a thrilling way — a whole other recommendation). We hiked I think 7 miles that day. Everyone had a good time. I fell in love with the trail. In 2021, I think, I discovered hiking vlogs on YouTube, and every year since I've followed one or two or three hikers as they walk the 2,197.9 miles of the AT from Georgia to Maine! Fourteen states in total! One day and one video at a time! This is a whole genre so take your pick, but this year I'm following Laura, who attempted the hike in 2023 but got off trail after about 300 miles — y'all I think this time she's going all the way.
