Commission a local artist for a special gift

My almost 44 year old husband's birthday is later this month and I'm absolutely stumped on what would make a good gift for this person I've known for almost two decades! He likes running, being outdoors, being a dad, utilitarian in his style preferences. He's also had a particularly tough last 6 months so I want to knock it out of the park but I have decision fatigue. Budget is $500 or less. What say you internet?! What do I buy for the LOML?

I commissioned a painter whose work I admire to paint our daughter in my husband’s crappy project car (the true love of his life). Hard to imagine a gift he could have loved more. Depending on the artist it can fit lots of budgets. You do however need some lead time for research and production.
