Walking the highline/chelsea market: Make sure you get food at the market (pizza likely for the kids/ very fresh noodles for you) and check out the inciardi machine at Artist and Fleas.

also we loved the tenement museum - was much less overwhelming than a huge museum to explore. The guides are amazing and it is so immersive.

Also my kids loved seeing broadway shows! Highly recommend!

Governors Island: Take a nice ferry ride, walk around grassy fields, see the Statue of Liberty, eat and drink from food trucks or a couple restaurants. Delightful park! It can be seasonal, so check ahead.

Serendipity 3 for frozen hot chocolate: A nice place for a break, the girls will feel very sophisticated on the upper east side.

National Museum of Math: Walking distance from Chelsea!  Lots of fun activities for kids of all ages--I've been there with a group of kids that ranged from 3 to 14)--but small enough that you can let the kids roam around.

Transit Museum!!: You get to learn some history but ALSO RUN AROUND A BUNCH OF OLD TRAINS! I rec this to everyone

The Jim Henson Exhibition at the Museum of the Moving Image: Go see Big Bird in the feathered flesh. The whole museum is really fun and has some hands on animation activities.
