The part of her process of pulling everything out and sorting before deciding what stays really changed how I organize myself. I no longer accidentally have 12 pairs of scissors, etc.

I think that’s part of my issue. I put things “away” but that mostly means wherever I can fit them. I read the book years ago but didn’t really implement anything consistently. I will revisit, thank you so much!

I totally get it - honestly I t’s such an unnatural thing for me to do that I’ve even gotten into the habit of making little resting pads for things. I use a coaster to put my olive oil bottle on, e.g., so that way there’s an actual designated place for it on my countertop. I hope you find systems little by little that work for you! Doesn’t have to all come together in a day - maybe break it up weekend by weekend.

The vertical folding method alone changed my life.

Yes, the idea that everything needs its own place is where I’m starting! I heard another organizer talk about the fact that the downside is that it’s very easy to get decision fatigue if you truly follow the method of pulling everything out of a closet, for example. Especially if you are a person like me who doesn’t always complete a task before moving on to something else 😂

Seconding this rec! The trick for me was to actually do the entire book all the way through, and to sit with the parts that are about changing our relationship with stuff, not just the “here’s how to clean” parts. I did that the year this book came out and my life-long clutter issue never came back.
