I linked to Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s NYT op-ed here because I think it is an easier entry point than some of her other work, but her disability theory writing is truly incredible and really helpful for understanding how disability can be socially constructed and wrapped up in other hegemonic systems. Alice Wong is another writer and activist in this area whose work I’d recommend! And of course Judy Heumann, whose activism and leadership was instrumental in achieving the ADA. Her autobiography is fantastic. There’s such a rich body of work about disability rights and I think it’s so crucial to the way we disrupt the patriarchy. Embracing unruly bodies, valuing caregiving, recognizing the way we are all interdependent and interconnected to one another - this would definitely need to be part of any curriculum on this topic, IMO!
