The Berkshires: I'm sure if you live in Boston this is something you've done already, but I used to live in western Mass and early fall is simply effervescent there. The last time I went, I stayed at a really cute Airbnb in Belchertown that was right on a little lake, but North Adams (where MASS MoCA is) is also extremely beautiful

Chemin du Terroir (Laurentians): An hour outside Montreal. Much cheaper than VT or Maine and infinite Heated Rivalry style cottages and lakes to enjoy. Also really, really good food and cheese. Best grocery stores ever.
