Just, don’t do it. Don’t buy “art” at West Elm. Don’t get a lamp at Target (few exceptions allowed). Don’t buy your pillows at Pottery Barn (no exceptions for pillows).
It’s just not going to look cool because it’s not personal. We want to come to your house and know who you are. The majority of items in your home should be personal to you and your family. Collect things you love. Support local artists. Buy vintage stuff. Get a custom lamp shade to make it yours. It doesn’t have to be expensive - frame a page from a book. Display your kids’ paper mache whale (specific, I know). Take up needlepoint and make yourself a pillow. Spend an afternoon at the antique mall and see what speaks to you.
