I loathe networking but it’s how I’ve gotten almost every job I’ve had. I don’t meant schmoozing up strangers at a networking event. Just working the connections you have, even if they’re just acquaintances - or someone you meet on Rec League! A few years ago Anne Helen Peterson, a writer I followed, posted this Q on her message board and got hundreds of responses, the vast majority of which said they got their job through some sort of personal connection. And when I was thinking of starting a freelance business, a very extroverted friend of mine convinced me to cold message everyone I knew on LinkedIn. Her reasoning - which was accurate - was “if someone you knew 20 years ago messaged you to ask if you had any work or for an informational interview, would you respond and meet with them?” My answer was yes. So, painful as it was, I did it and I got three freelance jobs within a month!
What type of job are you interested in? Where do you live? Send the details and who knows, maybe I know someone to connect you with!
