My favourite film of all time. My review:
Charmed and mystified and charmed by the mystery. Shot on 16 and 35mm film with an eye that roams across small details, machinery and birds. A surreal approach to cinematography, all very naturalistic until, all of sudden, everything’s moving in fast forward, or the camera’s sliding backward and everything’s upside down. Shots of ancient frescoes, the sound of water dripping in darkness. Orpheus and Eurydice with dowsing, Etruscan sculpture, drag, invented sign language, cackling strangeness, all very real until it’s not— and yet, perhaps at its most real in its moments of surreality. A gorgeous, perfect film that I will be thinking about forever and urgently need to watch again.
Also— ends with Gli Uccelli by Franco Battiato. Incredible song choice.

“Co-sign 1000x. They don’t make films like this anymore… except Alice Rohrwacher did in 2023. (Between La Chimera and Challengers, it’s only dirtbag Josh O’Connor for meeeeeee.)”

“So indescribably beautiful. I love everything about this movie and will never forgive Neon for not giving it the rollout it deserved.”

“I love Josh O'Connor, Italy and marble statues - what else could a girl ask for?!!”
