We gave our then-6yo a CD player for Christmas last year, and it has been such a JOY! We find ourselves pooping into our local record shop more often (CD’s are usually half the cost of vinyl, so it’s an easier yes for our budget). There’s also a particular joy in watching your kid embark on the lifelong adventure of honing their musical taste.
About six months after CD’s came back into our lives like the old friends they are, we recieved an old DVD player from family friends, and y’all. The two-fold analog JOY! We pulled our remaining collection down from the attic and began treating the extensive DVD section of our local library (long live libraries!!) like a Blockbuster Video. No more wasting an hour trying to choose our next watch from, in all honestly, just too many on-demand choices.
Turns out, we’ve all been duped into subscribing to the media we love instead of owning it/borrowing it and therefore, curating/refining our individual tastes.

“We gave our now 8-year-old his own little boombox when he turned 6 so he could explore his own music without streaming. We gave him some of our old CDs to start and now we'll go to the record store so he can pick out (mostly used) CDs of his choice, with some guidance from us. He plays his music in his room every night before gong to bed. Sometimes on a weekend afternoon we'll lay in his bed and I”

“I still remember dancing in my bedroom to CDs (odd combination but I’d listen to 1D then change to 50’s/60’s) on my pink CD player. I think listening to music this way is more fun”
