St. John the Divine Cathedral

Looking for off the beaten path day trip recommendations for NYC. I grew up going often and have done most of the major sights; my husband’s been a few times and has covered the big stuff too. Our girls (9 and 12) came once, two years ago and we did the Natural History Museum, Central Park, Balthazar, and John’s Pizza. We’re considering the Met but aren’t sold on it. Looking for recs that feel a bit more unique/local rather than the standard tourist spots bonus points for family-friendly.

Another great alternative to The Met— St. John the Divine Cathedral. They give vertical tours where you can climb spiral staircases and view the cathedral from above and see the stained glass up close. So cool! I’ve taken friends/family to this one a couple times.
