The ending was great, and I loved how the movie plot surprised me!

There's no denying Mikey’s star quality. Supposedly, Sean Baker was applauded for consulting with actual sex workers while making this — we love to congratulate men on doing the literal bare minimum — but I found Anora’s character to be an offensively underdeveloped, one-dimensional punchline. The male gaze of it all filled me with rage because it felt so unrepresentative of how a character like Anora would actually respond in most of these situations. This was marketed as a comedy, but I simply couldn’t find the humour in men committing violence against women — especially those engaging in a profession that’s already so stigmatised. I think it’s important to reflect on why we are still worshipping men who insist on telling women’s stories. Would a sex worker director have received the same level of praise, recognition & awards as a film directed by a famous man profiting off his own interpretation of an industry he is not a part of? Of course not.

I also personally thought 2.5 hours was self-indulgent!!! I can't sit still for that long bahaha

Such a good perspective. I didn’t know this was marketed as a comedy?!?! I assumed this was like an obvious sad movie (not because she’s an sw but because of the plot) I can’t imagine trying to watch it from a funny perspective. I think it’s a very good point and a big thing lately for the industry to try and capitalize on the OF and sex work being more part of life ina way people speak about while never hiring actual SW (with only few examples I can think of). I wasn’t sure who the director was when I saw the movie/ have to google it now but I think generally men telling women’s stories doesn’t go the way it would from a women’s perspective. Usually Ina disappointing way. It would be very cool to have a movie with women who by women are informed about it also yes 2.5 hours is starting to hit my mental time for a movie limit also!!! I literally pause and take a little break sometimes bc I need *mentally a commercial* lol
