Informational interviews: Set up tons of these and expand your network. In an age where job seeking is highly competitive and employers are drowning in resumes (and having AI rule out most of them without a human ever setting eyes on them), these informal conversations can establish personal relationships that unlock opportunities far beyond what a standard application can achieve.

Some tips (these are mine; more at the link below):

Start close and work your way out: Don’t rule out people you already know — family, friends, and teachers who know your value can be your strongest advocates.

Keep it short: If it’s someone you’ve never met, ask for 15 to 20 minutes of their time.

State your goal: Clearly mention that you want advice and insights, not a job.

Do your homework: Reference a shared connection or specific detail from their background. Come prepared with specific questions.

Take notes and integrate findings: Write down insights, skill/experience gaps to address, and potential contacts or resources. Use this information to refine your applications and plans.

Act like a professional: Reaching out already shows that you’re proactive and invested. Keep the vibe going — follow up thoughtfully; have your resume already updated so you can send it over if they ask for it. Keep in touch so that person remains a part of your network.

Bottom line: more people, more opportunities. You may be surprised where your next job comes from!
