Not the Henry James novel, not even the T.S. Eliot poem, though the latter is one of my favorites (and I can recite it from memory). This Portrait is a fragrance, and it’s my favorite of all time. It’s described as “rose-forward,” but the rose is mixed with other elements and smells nothing like the old lady tuberose perfume that used to make me slightly queasy when I rode NYC buses in the ‘70s. It smells mysterious yet sweet, sophisticated, and heavenly. Worth every penny, for a splurge.

“Smells like European Aristocracy, church, the Masters section of a museum, a digestif at the club, Mimi Thorrison and me in winter.”
