Murderland by Caroline Fraser looks at the rise of serial killers in 1970s and ’80s America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, and explores whether environmental factors such as lead and other pollutants may have played a role.
What I found most interesting was that the book goes beyond individual killers to examine the broader history of pollution, industry, and public health in America. Fraser connects true crime with environmental history in a way that gives a different perspective on a familiar subject. it is also part autobiographical weaving in Fraser’s own stories about living during those times.
A well-researched and thought-provoking book, especially if you’re interested in the intersection of crime, science, and society.

“I don’t really get down with true crime. But this is really an excellent long form of the impact of literal toxic industrial waste on the era of serial killers.”
