Did you see that movie Sinners? It turns out there’s an authentic Mississippi-style juke joint right here in Los Angeles. Actually there are several, but my favorite is MJ’ Unique Social Club located at 3668 West Slauson Ave. Every Sunday night from 7pm until 11pm the club hosts some of the best underground blues and R&B artists in Los Angeles. The multicultural, multigenerational event stars 78-year-old blues legend Bobby Warren, who routinely burns the house down each week. The coolest part is that after Bobby plays they open the show up for a jam, so anyone can get in on the action. At $7 for the audience and $5 for performers, including dinner, it’s also one of the best deals in Los Angeles. I’m there every Sunday.
