Vintage Schwinn bikes
my vintage cherry red Schwinn Traveler ($175 from the bike library) is my constant companion in iowa city. what a delight it is to move the body

Florence Merlin’s Striped Cardigan knitting pattern
i’m now of an age where friends are having babies, & for the best of mom-friends (the True Appreciators of baby finery) i’ve gotten in the habit of knitting Florence Merlin’s baby cardigan. i can crank one out in a few sessions. compared to knitting for adults, making baby clothes is instant gratification; the fine drape of fabric knitted from fingering-weight yarn is a delight. tiny pearlescent buttons are a must.

In The Desert by Stephen Crane
one of my absolute all-timers. taught it to my students last week during a close reading exercise and they ate it tf uppppp which is always a gratifying surprise. embrace your inner creature and learn to like your bitter heart baby

the regret of trying & failing
as opposed to the regret of not trying at all. you can mourn something finite, like a disappointing answer to a big question you were scared to ask, or not getting an opportunity you reached for. but at least you know you were capable of trying, and you can move on. my heaviest regrets are all the unanswered questions, things i’ve left un-done, un-said.
