Goodnight Moon (1947)
A masterpiece written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd
Sula (1973) by Toni Morrison
“In a way, her strangeness, her naiveté, her craving for the other half of her equation was the consequence of an idle imagination. Had she paints, or clay, or knew the discipline of the dance, or strings, had she anything to engage her tremendous curiosity and her gift for metaphor, she might have exchanged the restlessness and preoccupation with whim for an activity that provided her with all she yearned for. And like an artist with no art form, she became dangerous.“
Bony-Legs (1983) written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Dirk Zimmer
One of my all-time favorite books from childhood. A scary and slightly humorous retelling of the classic Russian fairy tale of the witch Baba Yaga. Cole’s writing is a joy to read aloud and Zimmer’s creepy illustrations will haunt / enchant readers for a lifetime!(You may recognize his work from “In a Dark, Dark, Room and Other Scary Stories.”) Works as a picture book and an early reader.
