Sesame Street: Big Bird Discovers the Orchestra
I’ve been listening to these vintage Sesame Street music appreciation albums with my toddler. Catchy enough to get his attention, deep enough to keep me listening, and a nice respite from the current kids music rotation. It’s always quaint to hear the cue to flip the record. “Making music’s fun” is an ear worm. You’ve been warned!
Double Chocolate Layer Cake, Deb Perelman’s edit
my go to birthday cake for grownups. For a dinner party “just a small slice” crowd, I make a 2/3 recipe for 3 tall layers in a 5” cake pan. It’s not too sweet, the secret ingredient is hot coffee. Use the good stuff. Having a set of three spring form cake pans of the same size makes this a very convenient bake. It’s been simplified to a one bowl recipe so you 100% have to sift the cocoa. Don’t mess around! Cream cheese frosting instead of ganache is also a big time saver because it’s much easier to ice.
Road trip to the Hudson Valley Pottery Tour
The third weekend in October, six ceramic artists open their incredible studios. These are your favorite potter’s favorite potters. Each artist has invited guests, and it’s generally peak leaf peeping. It’s possible to see all six studios in one day, but if you want to shop, have a leisurely lunch and explore, make it a weekend. 2026 is the 10th year of the tour and has a fantastic line up. The work spans from wood fired to 3d printed. All within about 2 hours of NYC. Host studios: Doug Peltzman, Kathy Erteman, Tim Rowan, Jeff Shapiro, Anat Shiftan, Bryan Czibesz.
