“Take Five” by The Dave Brubeck Quartet

This is how you get introduced to jazz music. That is, if you didn’t grow up with Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Dave Brubeck captured the delightfulness of jazz with this track, while simultaneously raising the ambient cool in the room to a level most of us aren’t accustomed to but are so very glad we have the pleasure of easing into. If the drums aren’t enough to hook you (before you can imagine the finger dance necessary for the playful piano rhythm), give it a few more seconds. If you’re somehow still not there, let the saxophone flow through you like cream poured into coffee.

“Manchester” by Kishi Bashi

This was my introduction to Kishi Bashi, who has become, inarguably, one of the greatest living independent music artists alive. His catalogue is full of absolute beautiful gems. I can’t recommend him enough, if you aren’t familiar already.

There’s no shortage of places to see live jazz in New York City, as one of the epicenters for the genre. This locale offers an intimate, pared-down, come-as-you-are-but-leave-elevated experience. You may see the next Miles Davis, or you may see the latest explorations in avant-garde experimentation. Probably more likely the latter. But, at least you won’t regret how you spent your evening in the city.
