My Rec League Starter Pack

Bowie Sits

Bowie gets a two-mile walk every day, and sometimes she needs a break.

TRUST

We've been going to Trust (TRUST? trust? Trust) for breakfast and lunch for years now, and it never fails to be a good meal. Years ago they were at the forefront of the "skillet Brussels sprouts resurgence" we've seen for appetizers, and they continue to make killer appetizers and entrées. Starting breakfast with a sticky bun is a must -- if you save room for the rest of breakfast, you can't go wrong with their take on shakshuka (baked eggs), fried rice, or an egg white scramble. If you skip the bun, head right on to the breakfast burger (always add the egg). Cold brew is a must, though they have a full bar with breakfast-y drinks (mimosas, etc.) too, if you like. Check out their other restaurants too -- Wise Ox on El Cajon Blvd. has the best fancy sandwiches and fries, and I'm not sure what happened to their ice cream shop (Mr. Trustee) but maybe it turned into a truck? We want to try A'Louest, too, but good luck getting a reservation.

Nomad Donuts

Their donuts are good, yes -- but I didn't know my favorite kind of bagel was a Montreal-style bagel until I had theirs. They're wood-fired and delicious. If you can't decide, I recommend the rosemary and sea salt. We get a half-dozen and freeze them when we get home -- pull one out before your morning walk and you have a fresh bagel for breakfast during the week. (At home, try the za'atar with hummus instead of cream cheese.)

The fleeting moment when your turn signal flashes at exactly the same time as the car in front of you

My head canon is that every automobile engineer has their own blinker delay speed, so they're all just slightly different, even by a few milliseconds. Humans perceive time imperfectly. Seeing those little alignments in the universe is a reminder that the moments we share in connection pass just like everything else, so cherish them when you notice.
