A Woman's Face (it's Spring) (2020)

We tend to understand things in relation to ourselves. We say the sun sets and the moon rises while the earth rotates under our feet. Our lives are pretty short, so we consider mountains immovable even though they’re constantly changing, growing or eroding, right in front of us. Aidan Koch draws series of short animations. Brain Mechanics by Naomi Clark

Naomi Clark’s work always feels full of joy, curiosity, and energy. I can picture her dancing in her studio while she paints. Sometimes she’ll drape her paintings over water, like they too were made to move. (I’ve been following her work ever since we were in grad school together.) On this print, note the rough edge. It’s known as a deckled edge. Historically, a deckled edge was usually the product of handmade paper but now it more often means the paper was torn down to size by hand.
