One of my favorite cookbooks. Rich in history and vignettes. Explains the regional differences in many classics and everything I’ve made has turned out great. Her all shortening pie crust is easy and I keep some in the freezer for galettes.

The first black cookbook I remember buying for myself (on my kindle!) It’s more than a cookbook with songs accompanying every recipe. The creativity that went into this book. Plus great recipes. You can really see the beginning of Bryant Terry’s curation that grows with his other great books.

Shortening / Lard

There are times for butter. There are times for oil. And there are times for shortening. Essential for something- we all need to add it back into our kitchen rotation.
