Teaching to Transgress (bell hooks)
hooks can be hit-or-miss for me, but this was a tremendous resource while I prepped to teach high school for the first time. I could probably stand to read more classroom management manuals or something, but I'm rereading this instead.
Back (Lauren Michele Jackson)
We're all better off when we get new work from Lauren. I love embarrassing her by loudly announcing that she's a genius to whoever we happen to be around, so here I am on the internet doing more of the same.
Nécessaire The Lip Balm
When I was a kid, my lips would regularly get dry and crack straight down the middle. It's happened a couple times since I've been an adult, too, and the vast majority of lip products just reactivate that chapping and freak me out. This is one of the few - the proud - that doesn't. Long-lasting moisture, not sticky, and makes your lips look cute to boot. I love it.
Grateful Dead bumper stickers
I recently started a new job in a very (very) tony town and on the days that I feel isolated and out of place, seeing a Dead sticker on someone's car cheers me up and reminds me not to generalize too much about where I am and who I'm around. I befriended a coworker because she has one of the Steal Your Face skull; now I'm figuring out who drives the car with the dancing bears on it. It's fun to find your people. (I'm gonna get these terrapins.)
