The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Perhaps my favorite novel… a beautiful meditation on good and evil as explored through the devil visiting 1930’s Moscow, inciting a variety of psychedelically hilarious results. Also worth looking into is the story of the novel’s publishing, which could be a novel itself.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
I love anything by Shirley Jackson, but her final novel is her true opus in my opinion. If you grew up believing in your own specific witchcraft, you will love this piece of essential weirdo literature.
The Library Book by Susan Orlean
Did you know the biggest library fire in US history happened the same week as Chernobyl? This is a book about the history of that as well as libraries in general.
Les Enfants Terribles by Jean Cocteau
Twisted French siblings. There’s also a movie!
