My Rec League Starter Pack

But Not for Me by Ahmad Jamal

One of the quintessential piano trio albums. The levels of restraint and cool are unmatched. Surrey With The Fringe on Top is tops!

Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter

Elvin’s fill kicking it into Wayne’s solo on the opening track, Witch Hunt, defies the laws of space and time. A perfect album.

Mystical Composer by Momoko Kikuchi

Bop of the summer for me. Whole album is perfect for night driving with the windows down but Mystical Composer hits on all fronts from the busy bass to the keyboard hooks. Chorus takes you somewhere.

Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris, Time Out of Mind by Bob Dylan, and Teatro by Willie Nelson

These three mid-90s albums were all produced by Daniel Lanois and deserve to be seen as trilogy. They all feature an airy and lush sonic landscape and devastating songwriting. Also, Brian Blade's drumming on both Wrecking Ball and Time Out of Mind elevates these albums to a whole other level. The icing on the three-layered cake is Emmylou singing backing vocals on Teatro.
