Zapp and Roger peformance at BET (1989)

The musicianship and energy in this give me such delight. It’s a miracle they did this, and it was on television!! I would go back to the filming of this if I had a time machine. I would even settle for the first time I watched this video, life changing.

Columbus (2017) and the city Columbus,IN

A movie where I felt like both main characters. The Midwestern summer is palpable and comforting to me. Watched this movie before going to Columbus, Indiana, where it was filmed. The small city is a treasure trove of Modernist architecture because Joseph Irwin Miller, the chairman of the biggest company in the town, was wealthy with good taste. (this type of person has gone extinct, imo) He also believed that good architecture and art should be accessible to everyone. Highly recommended you spend a weekend there drooling over these buildings, walking around at night looking into lit-up buildings from the outside forlornly.

Inciting Joy by Ross Gay (2022)

I adore Ross Gay, his writing hits me squarely in my urban garden heart. I went to hear him speak and someone asked about how he juxtaposes humor and grief in one sentence, and he said something like it is joy carrying each other’s sorrows. And life is devastating. He also said teaching is how to notice things, and I could not agree more as a teacher. Please read! And feel your soul be replenished and affirmed. And get a few cackles in, too.

Sorry my favorite bird would kick your favorite bird’s ass in a fight. They steal fish from fishermen, have the most mournful calls, and carry their baby on their backs. Just graphically so crisp and beautiful. Perfect birds.
