Oliver's Pizza
one of my favorite spots in downtown San Rafael. delicious wood fired Neapolitan pizza with seasonal salads, and a great drink menu. perfect for date night or smaller groups. limited business hours. get there early, no reservations.
Everest Curry And MoMo House
officially vetted by a Nepalese Uber driver who told me it’s the most authentic spot around, so you know it's not just on the sign. the portions here are generous and spice levels range, which is probably why my order is so basic, but honestly hits every time: malai kofta, naan (plain or garlic), saag paneer, and butter chicken. add the momos if you have a bigger appetite.
Sol Food
mention san rafael to anyone in SF and you will inevitably hear: "have you been to Sol Food? it's so good!" it really is a local rite of passage. even Bad Bunny brought his entire crew here during his 2022 tour, so don't worry mami, the food has a stamp of approval. i am a creature of habit and love a saucy dish, so i always order the Camarones Criollos - ask for 1 tostones/1 maduros, and add extra shrimp (everyone at the table will want a bite). if the plate is too much and want the insider take, get the Shrimpy Burrito (mm...the red sauce) off the "not-so-secret" menu, which is exclusive to the san rafael location. bad bunny ordered the Mofongo Relleno de Camarones, if you wanted to know. see the camarones!!
Pond Farm Brewing Co.
Pond Farm is a local brewery that connects the west end of san rafael to neighboring towns, so I really see it as a place that brings people together. The staff is always so kind, funny, and they have the best playlist when a live band is not playing. it is popular with cyclists looking to quench their thirst, families because it is kid-friendly, and dogs are welcome (outside) too! they recently updated their menu, but they always have specials and are constantly making changes based on feedback - there really is something for everyone. however, we recently learned hummus replaced the crostini and onion dip. my gut is happier, but honestly, that dip was worth it. if someone from pond farm sees this: i loved the jalapeño poppers special, and please bring back the nachos from many football seasons ago. thank you. can you tell i grew up in new jersey? only if they had disco fries...
