Soy Cuba (1964)

Forever going to be one of my favorite films ever. Camera movement that evokes the feeling of the sublime. Some of the greatest black and white film ever shot, backed by one of the greatest revolutionary stories in history. (My lovely girlfriend bought me the criterion collection edition for Christmas)

The basis of my radicalization. Recommended to me by the strangest professor I’ve ever had, a Russian television network personality teaching in Tulsa Oklahoma. The book outlines the history of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense organization from its conception to it’s ending and impact on the United States. A must read for anyone remotely interested in the civil rights movement and the FBIs COINTELPRO operation.

The ultimate streaming service catalog. Tubi doesn’t spend its money made from ad revenue on Tubi originals (though there are plenty of gems like The Lesbian Homie) instead Tubi acquires the back catalog that major streaming platforms are going away with. In doing so Tubi has an incredible selection of classic films primarily predating the 2000s alongside hosting some of the greats like Alfred Hitchcock and John Woo. A perfect service when I want to watch a random 1970s film.

Starting a Movie Club

Undoubtedly the best thing I ever did in college was establish a movie club. Titled the Letterboxd Movie Night Club the goal was to establish a day of the week where everyone could sit down hang out and watch a movie that someone was interested in or already loved. Each week we’d spin a wheel for who would pick the movie choices then the group would vote on a movie and convene on Wednesday. This created something to look forward to every week and created a bond with the group that would have us hanging out 3-4 times a week at points. My only regret is that we didn’t start it sooner.
